Saint Stephen IV was Pope of Rome from 816 to 817. He served the Church during a period of political uncertainty and sought peace among Christians while preserving the rights and unity of the Roman See.
Stephen was known for his care of the poor and for his concern that the Church’s worship and discipline remain faithful to tradition. He died after a brief pontificate and was honored among the holy successors of Saint Peter.
