Saint Pietro I Orseolo was a Venetian doge who left public office to embrace the monastic life. After serving his people as ruler, he withdrew to the monastery of Cuxa, where he sought God through prayer, penance, and obedience.

Pietro’s conversion from political power to hidden monastic holiness became a lasting witness to the freedom of the children of God. Pope Clement XII confirmed his cult and assigned his feast to January 14; the Roman calendar now commemorates him on January 10.
