Saint Nicholas Tavelic was a Croatian Franciscan priest and missionary who served the Christian community in the Holy Land. He preached the Gospel in Jerusalem with his Franciscan companions and sought to bear witness to Christ with humility and courage.

Nicholas and his companions were martyred in Jerusalem on November 14, 1391, after proclaiming the Catholic faith. Pope Paul VI canonized them in 1970, making Nicholas the first canonized Croatian saint.
