Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat was a French religious sister and foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart. Born in Joigny, she dedicated herself to forming young women in the Catholic faith through prayer, study, and a disciplined Christian education.

Under her guidance, the Society established schools in many countries and united intellectual formation with love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Sophie governed with humility and courage through years of upheaval. Pope Pius XI canonized her in 1925.
