Saint Egidio Maria of Saint Joseph was an Italian Franciscan lay brother who served the people of Naples through humility, prayer, and works of mercy. Born in Taranto, he entered religious life and accepted the ordinary duties of community life with extraordinary charity.
He was known for caring for the poor, visiting the sick, and offering spiritual encouragement to all who sought his help. Egidio remained faithful to the hidden holiness of service, and Pope John Paul II canonized him in 1996.
