St. James Buuzaabalyaawo

Facts

Saint James Buuzaabalyaawo was a Ugandan Catholic layman and martyr who served the Church during the persecution under King Mwanga II. He embraced the Christian faith and remained faithful when the royal authorities demanded that the converts abandon Christ.

James was killed at Namugongo on June 3, 1886, with the other Uganda Martyrs. His witness shows the courage of ordinary lay Christians who accepted death rather than deny the Gospel, and he was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1964.
