Saint Joaquina Vedruna de Mas was a Spanish wife, widow, mother, and foundress who responded to God’s call through every stage of life. After the death of her husband, she devoted herself to prayer, charity, and the education and care of those in need.
In 1826 she founded the Carmelite Sisters of Charity, whose apostolate joined contemplation with service to the sick, the poor, and children. Joaquina bore suffering with confidence in God and guided her daughters in generous love of Christ. She was canonized by Pope John XXIII in 1959.
