Saint Jean-Baptiste de La Salle was a French priest and the founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Born in Reims, he gave up a promising ecclesiastical career and devoted himself to the Christian education of children, especially those who were poor.
He established schools and formed teachers to unite sound instruction with the formation of Christian character. His trust in Divine Providence and his zeal for Catholic education shaped a lasting educational apostolate throughout the Church. He was canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1900 and proclaimed Patron of Christian Teachers by Pope Pius XII.
