Saint Jadwiga of Poland was a queen who placed her authority, learning, and personal resources at the service of the Gospel. She became monarch of Poland while still young and married Duke Jogaila of Lithuania, whose baptism helped open the way for the Christianization of Lithuania.

Jadwiga founded churches and educational works, cared for the poor, and supported the restoration of Christian learning. She was known for prayer, humility, and concern for peace among peoples. She died in Kraków on July 17, 1399, and was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1997.
