Saint Caedmon was an Anglo-Saxon poet and lay brother associated with the monastery of Whitby. According to the venerable account of Saint Bede, Caedmon received a remarkable gift of composing songs in praise of God and used that gift to proclaim the truths of the Christian faith.

Under the guidance of Saint Hilda, he entered the monastic community and learned sacred history so that he could express it in words understood by ordinary people. His hymn of praise to the Creator is regarded as the earliest known English poem, and his life remains a witness to the way God can sanctify ordinary talents.
