Saint Auguste Chapdelaine was a French priest of the Society of the Foreign Missions of Paris who offered himself for missionary service in China. Born in La Rochelle-Normande, he entered the priesthood with a desire to proclaim the Gospel among people who had not yet received it.

After arriving in China, he ministered courageously despite hostility toward the Christian faith. He was arrested, tortured, and executed in the province of Guangxi on February 29, 1856. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 2000, among the Chinese martyrs.
