Saint José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros was a Venezuelan physician, professor, scientist, and lay Franciscan who placed his professional gifts at the service of the poor. Born in Isnotú, he studied medicine and became one of Venezuela’s leading physicians while remaining deeply devoted to prayer, the Eucharist, and the practice of Christian charity.

Known among the people as the “doctor of the poor,” he treated patients with compassion and often gave medical care to those who could not pay. He died in Caracas on June 29, 1919, after being struck by a vehicle while carrying out an act of charity. He was canonized by Pope Leo XIV on October 19, 2025.
