The Franciscan Martyrs of China are among the 120 Martyrs of China canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 2000. During the Boxer uprising in 1900, Blessed Gregory Grassi, Bishop; Blessed Francis Fogolla, Bishop; Blessed Elias Facchini, Priest; Blessed Theodoric Balat, Priest; and Blessed Andrew Bauer, Religious Brother, were killed in Shanxi on July 9. Other Franciscan martyrs of the same persecution included Blessed Anthony Fantosati, Bishop; Blessed Joseph Mary Gambaro, Priest; and Blessed Cesidio Giacomantonio, Priest, who were killed in southern Hunan. The wider Franciscan family among the martyrs also included Franciscan Missionaries of Mary and Chinese Secular Franciscans.
