Russian scholarly abbot and founder. The son of St. John the Iberian, he was born in Georgia, Russia. He went with his father to Mt. Athos, Greece, after being held hostage by the emperor of Constantinople. At Mt. Athos he co-founded a monastery and became abbot about 1002. He translated the patristic writings and was a noted scholar. He was summoned to Constantinople during his retirement and died on May 13 from injuries sustained when he fell off his mule.
