LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Facebook announced they will retrain employees who are responsible for curating their trending news to ensure a more balanced experience for readers. Recently, the social media network has been accused of favoring liberal content over conservative, in what has been called "systematic liberal bias."
Facebook's founder, Mark Zuckerberg is a known atheist and a friend of the Obama administration.
The controversy erupted earlier this month following years of outcry from conservatives who said their accounts were locked or banned and their posts often deleted, despite not violating any of the network's standards. According to many bloggers and page administrators, conservatives were targeted much more heavily by the Facebook police than their liberal counterparts.
Likewise, trending news often featured content written from a liberal perspective, and appeared to lack balance. Facebook has admitted this bias, but ascribed it to rogue employees or a lack of training.
Facebook has not explained what kind of training its employees would undergo, or how substantial the efforts would be. It is unclear when this training will begin.
Since Facebook is a private social network, it is not obligated to operate without bias, however it holds a substantial position in the public realm, prompting some senators to call for an inquiry into the social media giant. There is concern that with so many people reading news via Facebook, the social network could have the power to bend perceptions in favor of a particular political narrative.
