'[T]he development of full Artificial Intelligence could spell the end of the human race.'

After Microsoft's failure with AI teen "Tay," it should come as no surprise that more and more researchers are agreeing artificial intelligence requires a delicate balance between helpful tech and murderous exterminators.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to Express, several researchers and scientists have been backing Professor Stephen Hawking's statement that "the development of full Artificial Intelligence could spell the end of the human race."

Elon Musk, the founder of PayPal and SpaceX, stated: "I think we should be very careful about Artificial Intelligence. If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it's probably that. So we need to be very careful."

Chris Bishop, of Microsoft Research in Cambridge, agrees with both Hawking and Musk. He believes "Any scenario in which [AI] is an existential threat to humanity is not just around the corner. I think they must be talking decades away for those comments to make any sense."

He stated new tech, particularly with the power of AI, can go wrong. Though it holds the potential to bring societal benefits, it "will carry with it some risks."

Bishop acknowledges that "we are in control of that technology and we can make lots of choices about the paths that we follow," then claimed AI development can definitely benefit humanity - especially if we stop focusing so much on negativity.

"The danger I see is if we spend too much of our attention focusing on Terminators and Skynet and the end of humanity - or generally just painting a too negative, emotive and one-sided view of artificial intelligence - we may end up throwing the baby out with the bathwater."

Though Bishop is not suggesting we ignore thoughts of AI Terminators and unapproved missile launches, it is important to keep in mind the potential dangers of the creation or Artificial Intelligence. One day robots will be entrusted with all the cooking, cleaning - and even babysitting.

Keeping Terminators in mind can serve as a favor to humanity. As AI evolves, and eventually takes over mundane tasks, researches continue to weigh the pros and cons.
