Scammers take advantage of Facebook dislike button

Facebook's new dislike button is a scam.

Online scams are still prevalent, especially with the steady growth of new users. Social media giant Facebook gets new users every single day. However, novice users can pose dangers to themselves and to their Facebook friends by calling for "dislike" button scams. Despite Facebook's refusal to reveal dislike button details, scammers have pushed forward to exploit the concept.

Highlights

MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - The Blaze reported cybersecurity publication Hackread has warned the public of the probable spread of a new scam which targets users eager to install a "dislike" button on their Facebook accounts.

Experts suggested the public should be wary of links with headlines like "Get newly introduced Facebook dislike button on your profile," as they could be scams meant to access account information after routing unsuspecting users to malicious websites.

Facebook -and most the online sites- do not usually use such headlines for access to new features.

Snopes.com reported experts said clicking the download link claiming you'll get the new button installs malware to computers, allowing cybercriminals to steal nearly all stored data -including private information.

Users are usually asked to complete steps to install the long-awaited button -a move Facebook would never ask of its users. One step is a request to share the link to other Facebook users, which leaves experts thinking the scam is "expected to spread far and wide," warned HackRead.

The announcement of Facebook's dislike button has met with different responses ranging from excitement over finally being able to downvote topics they don't like seeing on social media to criticism over opening a gateway to more cyber bullying and the spread of anonymous "hate."
