LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The two companies announced their collaboration, combining technologies and "capabilities in design, manufacturing and certification" to produce the AS2.
Help provide kids with the quality learning tools they need.
"This is a major step forward for Aerion," said Robert Bass, the Aerion chairman and principal investor "It puts us solidly on track toward our objective of certifying the world's first supersonic business jet in 2021."
Aerion CEO Doug Nichols said that the partnership will greatly benefit both Aerion and airbus.
"This agreement accomplishes two major objectives. It provides validation from the industry leader in aerospace innovation, and it decisively kicks the program into high gear. Each company will benefit."
Aerion says that the AS2 is expected to fly at Mach 1.6, which is 1,217 mph, more than twice the average cruising speeds of modern commercial jets, which typically only travel between 480 and 560 mph.
Aerion was founded in 2002, aimed at making commercial supersonic jet technology.
The company announced that the AS2's wings are a new design that will reduce overall drag by around 20%. This will lead to longer flight ranges and lower fuel consumption.
The AS2 will have a 30-foot-long cabin that can seat 12 passengers in comfort, or can be reconfigured to let four sleep on overnight flights.
Currently the AS2 is predicted to cost more than $100 million, and Aerion hopes to being test flights by 2019.
