NEW YORK, NY (Catholic Online) - Journalists have been invited to a press conference on Wednesday, where Amazon is expected to unveil its latest innovation, a tablet to replace the Kindle e-reader. And while the Amazon tablet isn't expected to rival the iPad directly, it is expected to carve out some respectable market-share.

Many experts think the new tablet will build on the Kindle base of customers who may wish to upgrade without the cost of purchasing an iPad which can cost at least $400. The new Amazon tablet is expected to cost around $250, in order to be competitive with Barnes & Noble's Nook.
It is believed that Amazon will produce two versions of the tablet, in both 7 inch and 10.1 inch versions. The 7 inch will begin production in October and the 10.1 version will start production in the first quarter of 2012.

Amazon is well positioned to succeed. Analysts point out that Amazon has a large and loyal customer base, the marketing ability and direct supply capabilities are tried and tested. It also offers digital music, TV shows, and movies. And it can match or even beat Apple on price. The user base is large and can be encouraged to upgrade.

The curious thing about Amazon is its approach to sales. Apple sells inexpensive apps and other content in an effort to get people to purchase its hardware. Amazon is selling its hardware inexpensively to encourage people to purchase its ebooks, music, video and apps. Both approaches, although taking different directions, seem to work well.

Early rumors say the 7 inch Amazon tablet looks much like the BlackBerry PlayBook. They also report that  it is lighter and easier to hold than the iPad. It also runs an Amazon-specific version of the Android operating system.

Soon, Apple and the world will see if Amazon's tablet can succeed where others have failed.
