Illegal immigration is on the rise.

Jeff Sessions has issued a critical alert over illegal immigration amid a dramatic surge in illegal crossings.

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Nearly a million people are estimated to have crossed illegally into the USA in Fiscal Year 2016, according to Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL). He is describing the situation on the southwestern border as a "crisis."

According to Sessions, 817,740 people crossed illegally into the country in FY 2016. Nearly 40,000 people are detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and they the agency reports the number could rise to 47,000.

The number of people apprehended at the border is 23 percent higher this year than it was in 2015.

Sessions has called for a new approach to illegal immigration in the country.

"The integrity of our immigration system and our national sovereignty require a real change in enforcement. The future of our nation depends on strong, secure borders, and a president willing to enforce our laws. Without a commitment to deport aliens who violate our immigration laws, we lose our ability to protect our communities from criminal aliens, terrorism, and cartel-related crime and violence," Sessions said.

While the Catholic Church recognizes the right of people to immigrate, and stresses the importance of welcoming the alien, it does not condone the breaking of laws when unnecessary. The United States is a nation of laws with borders. Every nation has the sovereign right to secure its own borders. Each year hundreds of thousands of people enter the USA legally, by asking permission and waiting their turn. Illegal immigrants circumvent that process. We do allow those who require asylum to simply arrive and request it, but that is a tiny minority of cases. As for the rest who have shown no respect and no urgent need to enter our country, they will need to go back and respect our process, or not come at all.

Just as no person has the right to enter your home without permission or cause, no person has the right to enter another country.
