LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - "This city is broken in some ways," Justice Thomas told the Heritage Foundation at his dinner. Specifically, he was referring to the deadlock over the nomination of Merrick Garland. The Obama nominee has not been given a hearing leaving the court hamstrung.
"People aren't thinking things through," he said. "We have decided rather than confront disagreements and the differences of opinion, we will simply annihilate the person who disagrees."
Justice Thomas criticized the "Affordable Care Act," which is not affordable. "It seems like a misnomer considering all the things that are going on." Thomas was opposed to the law when he rendered his decision.
He also charged that some people like to pretend the Second Amendment "doesn't exist."
Justice Thomas spoke fondly of his former colleague, Antonin Scalia who passed away in February, has not yet been replaced.
The night ended with a bit of levity as Justice Thomas spoke about his fondness for travel. On one occasion he stopped in Georgia to refuel his RV when a truck driver approached him to ask, "Anybody ever tell you that you look like Clarence Thomas?"
Thomas mentioned that he enjoyed his trips across country in an RV, which allowed him to see so much more than he would have seen from a plane.
The Supreme Court is a major issue this election cycle. It is likely the next president could appoint up to four new justices in all over the next four to eight years.
