LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - "She's got to do better," Trump claimed during his tour in Albuquerque last month. "Maybe I'll run for governor of New Mexico. I'll get this place going. She's not doing the job. We've got to get her moving. Come on: Let's go, governor."
In keeping with Trump's usual egoist behavior, the Republican presidential nominee has claimed he could do a better job than someone else in a field he has absolutely no experience dealing with.
Many believe Trump's little outburst was his way of retaliating against the Republican governor because she was busy dealing with state business to attend his rally in Albuquerque.
As reported by the Albuquerque Journal, Martinez simply explained she was "really busy" and would be unavailable during Trump's campaign rally.
"I'm the governor of New Mexico and I'm really focused on what's going on here in New Mexico - just like the announcement we just did with 100 new high-tech and research jobs, improving the education for our kids, another job announcement tomorrow," Martinez described. "Those are the things that I'm concentrating on and I'm going to keep concentrating on."
Martinez's representatives stated she would like to have a meeting with Trump regarding New Mexico's labs and bases, "which are not only important to our state but also our national defense."
Since the report, Trump said he would enjoy a meeting with her, adding, "I respect her. I have always liked her."
Martinez's press secretary, Mike Lonergan, wrote in an email: "The Governor hopes to visit with Mr. Trump in the near future to discuss this issue and others that affect New Mexicans. As she has said, this has never been about her -- it's about the issues that impact New Mexico."
Though Martinez is open to meeting with Trump, she has yet to endorse him as the Republican nominee.
She has made it clear she does not approve of Trump's racist remarks concerning immigrants and his call for a Mexico-funded wall. Should the two meet, it is unlikely Martinez will immediately endorse the businessman.
