LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - When famed civil rights attorney Gail Heriot pointed out the absurdity of Obama's public school restroom edict, California representative Zoe Lofgren used her position to power to lash out in anger.
President Obama has asked all public schools to allow children to use whatever restroom they "identify" with effectively drawing children into the debate over transgender issues. The edict suggests that the child should get to decide if they feel like a boy or a girl, and may then use the restroom of their choice.
Furthermore, any school that refuses to go along with this scheme could be sued or have its federal funding cut off.
But not everyone thinks this is a good idea. Civil rights attorney Gail Heriot, in written remarks to the House of Representatives, made a basic fact very clear. A person cannot change their gender, even if everyone agrees to go along with the lie.
"If I believe that I am a Russian princess, that doesn't make me a Russian princess, even if my friends and acquaintances are willing to indulge my fantasy," she wrote in the testimony. "Nor am I a great horned owl just because - as I have been told - I happen to share some personality traits with those feathered creatures."
This is a common sense objection. Your gender is hardwired into your very DNA. Changing how your dress or walk or even having surgery does not change your DNA. A person born with male anatomy will always be male, no matter what procedures are performed.
Zoe Lofgren lashed back at Heriot, calling her an "uninformed bigot."
So while Heriot raised a common sense objection, Lofgren retaliated with a stalin-esque denouncement of Heriot's informed opinion and character. "I think you're a bigot, lady. I think you're an ignorant bigot," Lofgren spouted in self-righetous indignation. After all, how dare anybody not play along with the public fantasy that gender is whatever you want it to be.
But who's the bigot? Who's ignorant?
Gail Heriot is a law professor from the University of San Diego, a prestigious Catholic institution. She is a member of the U.S. Commission on Human Rights. Heriot also seems to understand basic biology better than Lofgren.
And who lost their cool? Lofgren did.
Lofgren has served for over two decades in Congress. She is driven by her politics, which define her reality. Unfortunately, her politics are at odds with objective reality and with the fact that millions of kids use school restrooms every day, without incident. Why then does she feel the need to draw children into her own sick, depraved view of human sexuality?
The real ignorance here is the failure to acknowledge how DNA and human anatomy works. The real bigot is a person who shouts down the dissenting voice because it does not agree with their political fantasies.
And that ignorant bigot is not Gail Heriot.
