LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - When House Democrats realized the bill amendment would fail, they erupted in a series of boos and a chant of "shame, shame, shame."
The amendment, which was proposed by openly homosexual Rep. Sean Maloney, would have destroyed the Russell Amendment, a law that protects people of faith who contract with the government.
Even President Barack Obama explained religious institutions receiving federal contracts and grants would be discriminated against should the amendment pass, but Democrats like Maloney didn;t care. Maloney claimed the amendment would be discriminatory against the LGBT community - specifically because religious employers would have the right to fire anyone in the LGBT community while simultaneously benefiting from government funding.
The House was scheduled to vote within a two-minute time limit but the uproar on the foor resulted in an extension to eight.
Eyes still flaming with anger, House Democrats tweeted the names of Republican members who they believe voted against the amendment.
The issue that conservatives understand but liberals do not is that religious freedom is enshrined in the Constitution as the First Amendment. The Constitution does not mention sexual behavior as deserving unique protection.
Few recognize the discrimination toward the religious, particularly Maloney, who is openly gay.
Maloney did not hesitate to point a finger at Republican Kevin McCarthy.
"Kevin McCarthy was personally twisting arms on the floor," Maloney claimed.
House Speaker Paul Ryan was in the midst of a weekly press conference during the amendment vote and was unaware of the chaos ensuing - but responded to a question about Republicans switching votes to ensure the measure failed.
"This is federalism," Ryan stated. "The states should do this. The federal government shouldn't stick its nose in this business."
For now, the religious are protected against the militant LGBT movement, but it is clear religious freedom remains under assault.
