LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Scott Pelly asked Brennan if he expects ISIS would attack the United States, Brennan replied, "I'm expecting them to try to put in place the operatives, the material or whatever else that they need to do or to incite people to carry out these attacks, clearly. So I believe that their attempts are inevitable. I don't think their successes necessarily are."
Brennan pointed out that ISIS wants to "provoke a clash between the West and the Muslim world."
This is an unsurprising motivation. When one examined the Western world from an Islamic perspective it becomes obvious that it is tainted with secularism, promiscuity and a host of other vices that are anathema to Islam. Many of these influences spread overseas, and affect people in Muslim countries, encouraging behavior that is un-Islamic from a fundamentalist perspective.
The primary reason ISIS has not attacked the US, according to Brennan, is because of the work being done by law enforcement and intelligence agencies. He also called for more latitude to carry out intelligence operations such as backdoor access to encrypted communications. The FBI is currently engaged in a dispute with Apple over a request to decrypt communications from the San Bernardino terrorists on an iPhone.
A substantial barrier, suggested, but not explicitly stated by Brennan, was political correctness. He also pointed out that in the event of a successful ISIS attack, the U.S. would become "more forceful" in its response to protect citizens.
Pelly asked, "If our policy after an attack in the United States would be to be more forceful, why isn't that our policy now before an attack?"
Brennan explained that our current approach is surgical and that we do not want to alienate other Muslims who are not involved with ISIS. However, it is clear that if we were attacked, then we would become far more aggressive in our measures.
This prompts the question, why aren't we being more aggressive already? The answer is simply that the American people don't appreciate the threat Brennan is trying to express.
