Obama delivers a lackluster, critical State of the Union address.

President Barack Obama delivered his final State of the Union speech on Tuesday. He took advantage of the occasion to express optimism and to counter criticism over his presidency. It is obvious that Obama is looking to safeguard his legacy, which he will need to succeed in life after the Oval Office.

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Obama delivered his last State of the Union speech to Congress last night, and expressed optimism about America's future. He also made thinly-veiled attacks against Donald Trump, perhaps in an attempt to legitimize his own doings and to turn the nation against the GOP front-runner.

Obama did not mention Trump by name, but made references to Trump's message, that America has lost its edge due to political incompetence. Obama mused, "So is all the rhetoric you hear about our enemies getting stronger and America getting weaker. The United States of America is the most powerful nation on Earth. Period. It's not even close." He referred to the data-driven assertion by Trump as "hot air," and accused him of "peddling fiction."

He then expressed optimism, saying "Our unique strengths as a nation - our optimism and work ethic, our spirit of discovery and innovation, our diversity and commitment to the rule of law - these things give us everything we need to ensure prosperity and security for generations to come."

Beyond these quotes, including others which accused Trump of attempting to divide the nation, the speech was wearisome and non-substantive. And why not? What is Obama's key accomplishment for 2015?

Nobody can name it, because he has not accomplished anything of note in the past year. A full 365 days and nothing of note accomplished.

Criticism of the obviously non-substantive speech was quick. The White House retorted that they did not want to be seen as laying the groundwork for another Democratic president.

Probably a good idea after all.
