Offensive or not? University of California issues bizarre speech police to tell you what not to say

Words like 'melting pot' are deemed inappropriate.

University of California is providing suggestions on what to say and what not to say within the campus grounds. However, the words and statements they deem as offensive, sexist and racist are not simply explicit words with direct negative connotations. According to administrators of the university, these statements are of microaggressors, including even the tiniest potentially offensive remarks.

MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - "America is a melting pot," "Why are you so quiet?" and "I believe the most qualified person should get the job," are some of the statements issued to be avoided, according to The Daily Beast.

Although those on campus are simply requested to abide by the standards from the UC Speech Police, some feel compelled to abide because of fact that the restrictions came from the desk of UC President Janet Napolitano.

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend seminars to learn how to speak without using such words and statements, "to foster informed conversation about the best way to build and nurture a productive academic climate."

Out of the 10 UC campuses, nine of them are holding the seminars throughout the year. One of the professors who chose not to comply on the invitation shared other information with The College Fix recently, including the "Recognizing Microaggressions and the Messages They Send" handout. It has a list of words, phrases and statements that could be considered offensive, adapted from a book.

UC administrators claim they are only protecting the welfare of the student body. Reports included the event where an organization actually pushed the educators to institute a similar campaign after always being offended, as they had claimed.

There are some who see the speech police existence problematic, and a warning of probable censorship.
