LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The growing acceptance of gay marriage and abortion in the U.S. is threatening the traditional values built by Christianity.
"We are at the water's edge of the argument that mainstream Christian teaching is hate speech. Because today, we've reached the point in our society where, if you do not support same-sex marriage, you are labeled a homophobe and a hater," the Senator from Florida told CBN News.
The liberal left's "next step is to argue that the teachings of mainstream Christianity, the catechism of the Catholic Church, is hate speech, and that's a real and present danger."
These remarks are just part of Rubio's defense of traditional marriage. Earlier in the year, he was quoted as calling the supposed constitutional right to same-sex marriage, "ridiculous and absurd."
The Supreme Court is soon expected to begin hearing arguments in a case that may lead to same-sex marriage becoming legal in all 50 states.
While Rubio's position on gay marriage fits in with the traditional Republican view, it does not sit well with the majority of Americans, 58 percent of whom support the view that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. While it is unclear how much of an issue same-sex marriage will be in 2016, it may hurt Rubio and other Republican candidates if it becomes a key issue.
