An Interview with Dr. Alveda C. King: Protecting the Civil Rights of the Unborn

It is hard to think about Civil Rights, without thinking of the great civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., best known for his famous speech, "I have a Dream." Yet, the life-giving work begun by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. continues on, as his niece, Dr. Alveda C. King, also a minister, carries the civil rights torch for him, and her deceased father, Reverend A.D. King for the peaceful preservation of civil rights for all Americans, especially those of women and the unborn.

BALTIMORE,MD (Catholic Online) - Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Alveda C. King, truly one of the leading American Civil Rights leaders of our time. Pastoral Associate and Director of African American Outreach for the Catholic prolife organization, 'Priests for Life,' Dr. King works closely with Fr. Frank Pavone, president of Priests for Life.

As National Spokeswoman for 'Silent No More,' her Pro-life leadership is making great inroads in the peaceful promotion, and preservation of, the Culture of Life. Among her other many accomplishments, Dr. King is author of 2 books including, 'How Can the Dream Survive If We Are Murdering Our Children?'

According to Dr. King, when asked about where the Pro-life Movement fits in with her life's work, "The Pro-life Movement is a continuation of the Civil Rights Movement.and abortion is one of the greatest Civil Rights issues of our time."

Furthermore, she notes that her father and uncle, Martin Luther King, Jr. were Pro-life and "worked hard to promote and preserve civil rights for all Americans." In that way, they laid the ground work for the Pro-life Movement of today, and fueled contemporary, peaceful efforts to preserve the Sanctity of Human Life, a basic teaching of the Church today.

In our interview, while talking with Dr. King, she emphatically noted what may seem obvious to those involved in the early Civil Rights Movement, as well as, the present day Pro-life Movement, but perhaps not always beyond, is that "Every individual is created equal in the eyes of God." In that way of thinking, from fertilization and conception, to natural death, human life is a precious gift from God that must be respected, protected, and preserved.

Not only is Dr. King dedicated to addressing Pro-life issues that impact the Civil Rights of infants, she is especially interested in and involved in helping women who are victims of abortion through compassionate, post-abortion healing and after-care.
