LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - There's no question some of this year's campaign rhetoric is over the top, and that both camps have been "fast and loose" with the facts from time to time. However, there's a difference between making a mistake, or spinning the truth, and outright lying.
The card says, "Dear Mom, Mitt Romney says he would repeal the Affordable Care Act. So here's a quick question: Can I borrow $18,000 to help pay for my birth control? Thanks!"
The e-card is obviously designed to frighten people into voting for Obama out of fear they might lose their health care coverage, their birth control, or become pregnant. After all, becoming pregnant is a legitimate fear that can be cultivated into votes for the anti-life movement.
The entire card is a lie, and on more levels than one.
Mitt Romney isn't going to strip vulnerable young women of their health care so they must run home to their mothers for their basic needs. At no point in the campaign has he even suggested the denial of healthcare to women.
For its part, birth control does not cost $18,000 unless you're including elective surgical procedures in the equation. A woman can obtain an abortion, abortifacients, and other contraceptive aids without spending anywhere near $18,000.
However, there is good news for anyone who's worried about spending a fortune on birth control.
By following a few simple guidelines, women can protect their health and save their money, even without Obamacare's anti-life provisions.
For example, abstinence is the healthiest approach to avoiding pregnancy in existence. Saving yourself for marriage will help you avoid any complications associated with being an unwed mother. Understanding that children are a gift from God, entrusted to you from the moment of conception will help you cope with the blessing of pregnancy.
This is why a message such as Obama's must be refuted. This is not an ordinary lie, told by a politician struggling to garner votes. This is an absolute lie, a lie permeated by falsehoods at a much deeper level than fiction.
There may not be a word for such depth of falsehood in the English language, but if there were, it would apply here.
Ah wait, there is one!
Evil.
