LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Confirmation of the pending announcement has been given by the Romney campaign which has already been notified of the development by Santorum.
This development will undoubtedly pave the way for a Romney nomination in August and allows Romney to focus his attention on President Obama.
Rick Santorum has been absent from recent events as his daughter was recently hospitalized. His 3-year-old daughter, Bella, is occasionally hospitalized because of chromosomal defect Trisomy 18.
Although she was released from the hospital, it may be a critical factor in Santorum's decision to exit the race.
UPDATED 11:53 PDT
Speaking at a press conference at Gettysburg, PA today, Santorum said "We made the decision over the weekend that while this presidential race for us is over for us, for me, and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting,"
"This game is a long, long way from over," he added.
Santorum became a true conservative option for voters and his conservative credentials have been beyond question. He entered the spotlight by campaigning tirelessly in Iowa, canvassing the state by truck and engaging voters personally.
Since then, he has had mixed results in the primary polls, actually winning the Iowa caucuses and a number of other notable races. Despite his victories however, he has not been able to catch up to frontrunner Mitt Romney, who has a much larger war chest and has been outspending Santorum by vast margins.
