WASHINGTON, D.C. (Catholic Online) - Erroll Southers, the Obama administration's choice to head up the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has withdrawn his name from consideration on Wednesday. The former FBI agent indicated that this came since his candidacy had become a lightning rod for those with political agendas.
In accepting his withdrawal with sadness, the White House maintained that he would have made a good administrator.
Souther's nomination first came into question in October when issues were raised concerning his use of Federal resources to hold a background check on his estranged wife's boyfriend. The day after his nomination was approved he wrote the Senators and corrected his testimony, saying he had also twice conducted background checks himself.
During the nomination process, Republican Senator Jim DeMint objected, saying he was concerned that Southers would allow collective bargaining by TSA employees with the government.
The nominee's withdrawal leaves the TSA still without a leader at a time when government officials and the public at-large have expressed renewed alarm about the condition of air travel security.
