WASHINGTON, D.C. (Catholic Online) - The United States Senate voted 94-2 to confirm the nomination of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton as the next U.S. Secretary of State.

She is to be immediately sworn in a private ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.

The sole votes against the confirmation came from two Republican members, David Vitter of Louisiana and Jim DeMint of South Carolina.

Though there was discussion in the media throughout the last few days as to whether the fundraising relationships of her husband, former President Bill Clinton, would cause any clouds on the nomination - or even delay it - the swift vote and strong support revealed a lack of Senate concern.

Representatives of both Parties indicated that the quick response was an effort to assist the new president in his ability to confront the major policy issues including two wars, Middle East tension and concern over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

It was President Obama's former rival, Senator John McCain who urged his Republican colleagues to act swiftly for this confirmation.
