CHICAGO (Catholic Online) - "Let me simply say I feel like the old Alan Sillitoe short story 'The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner.' ... And that's what this is by the way, a long-distance run" said the Governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich to reporters as he returned from a long distance run.
The State House had just voted 114-1 to impeach him.
The dialogue on the floor of the Illinois House was filled with anger, outrage, and a shared embarrassment expressed by many for their State of Illinois.
The behavior which ultimately led to the Impeachment vote involved allegations contained in a criminal indictment filed against the Governor alleging that he engaged in what is called "Pay for Play" by attempting to sell the now vacant seat of the President elect, Barack Obama for political favors and/or cash.
The run reflected the approach that the embattled Governor has taken to the outcry against his remaining in office from the very beginning of the scandal, defiance. Like the ever-ready bunny he just seems to keep on going, acting as Governor and displaying no intention of giving up the position until and if he is forced to do so.
His recent appointment of Roland Burris to fill the unexpired term looks as though it will result in the seating of a new junior Senator from Illinois in spite of numerous efforts, at both the State and Federal level, to prevent it from occurring.
The Governor is scheduled to speak to the Press this afternoon.
