WASHINGTON, D.C. (Catholic Online) - Dr. Sanjay Gupta is the popular host of "House Call" on the CNN network. He also serves as the "chief medical correspondent" for the networks health and medical unit. It seems every time you turn on the television these days, you see Dr. Gupta.
He is a well respected practicing neurosurgeon and an assistant professor of neurosurgery. He also writes a regular column for Time Magazine on health and fitness. He offers medical updates on "House Call". He is widely viewed in a weekly podcast entitled "Paging Dr. Gupta".
The Doctor is a popular medical personality and is becoming a fixture in many American homes in an age when Doctors are becoming personality staples in our integrated media world.
A good communicator who speaks in easily understandable terms, Dr. Gupta addresses not only specifically "medical" issues but strongly encourages health, nutrition, exercise and wellness practices in daily life.
Dr. Gupta's popularity seemed to skyrocket after the horrific Sept. 11 attacks in New York City. He led many of the media updates concerning the health risks attendant to the toxic fumes and ongoing risks in the aftermath of the attacks. He frequently reported on similar matters after the anthrax attacks later that same year.
Comfortable with politics, the Doctor served as a White House Fellow in the 1990's. He also advised on health policy and wrote speeches for Hillary Clinton. He is from Michigan but was born of parents of Indian and Pakistani descent.
During the incursion into Iraq in 2003, Gupta was embedded with the Navy. However, he did much more than provide his regular reports. He performed brain surgery at least five times while on assignment. He is an engaging, articulate, telegenic and increasingly popular fixture in American homes these days.
Soon, he will be much, much more.
Sources confirm that Dr. Sanjay Gupta has been offered the position of Surgeon General of the United States by President Elect Barrack Obama. These reports also indicate that he will become the highest profile Surgeon General in American history and help to craft health policy under the new administration.
Although the Government position would come at great financial sacrifice to the successful Surgeon and media personality, he seems poised to accept the job.
