DENVER (Catholic Online) - It is official. After talking head pundits had debated as to how the nominating process would proceed in seemingly endless rounds over the first days of the convention, it was all quite orderly, simple and very clear.
Senator Hillary Clinton, whose speech electrified the delegates last night, prompting a new round of speculation, asked all of her supporters to join her in nominating by acclamation her chief rival for the Democratic nomination, the first term Senator from Illinois, Barack Obama, as the Democratic nominee for the Presidency of the United States. They did just that.
American history has been made today. Illinois Senator Barack Obama has become the first African American ever to receive the nomination of any Political party in the history of the United States. It is a day that will from this time forwarded be recounted in history books.
The normal order for nomination was not followed as the dramatic moment approached. When the delegates from Illinois were to be given their alloted time, they passed, turning the floor over to the New York delegation.
The Senator from New York, Hillary Clinton, approached the microphone. This history was made, appropriately, by her request. She said to the crowd: "With eyes firmly fixed on our future and in the spirit of unity ... let's declare together in one voice, right here, right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our President."
Loud cries of "Obama, Obama" filled the entire convention center. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., as the Chair of the convention, declared that Senator Barack Obama had accepted the nomination.
