CHESAPEAKE, VA (Catholic Online) - Steven W Mosher is the President of Population Research Institute (PRI) located in Front Royal, Virginia.

This Non-Profit public policy powerhouse was founded in 1989 as a research and educational organization dedicated to "objectively presenting the truth about population-related issues". For almost twenty years it has stood at the frontline of the struggle to unmask the lies of the "Zero Population Growth" movement and offer a better way, the way of truth, life, the person and the family.

PRI has unmasked the multiple abuses of human rights committed in the name of population control. As the world prepares to watch the Olympics in Beijing, China, this book is a must read. It exposes the truth. That Nation has perhaps led the way in the outer edges of the anti-natalist agenda.

In Chapter Three of this extraordinary book entitled "The Chinese Model", Mosher reveals the regime in Chinas true face. However, as with every claim in this meticulously researched and substantive book, he does not devolve into diatribes, he backs up his claims with the facts, the figures and a well documented and unassailable recounting of the historic context.

This same anti-natalist agenda has led to the systematic abuses of human rights in Bangladesh and dozens of other countries around the world.

Sadly, the great organizational perpetrator of this anti-life, anti-person, anti-family and anti-growth pogrom is the United Nations and some of its most willing allies are within our own Nation. Mosher traces the philosophical, historical and ideological roots of anti-natalism in Chapter 2, a compelling expose of the population control movement entitled "The Malthusian Delusion and the Origins of Population Control".There he also unmasks its deep roots in the American soil.

Again, like every chapter in this solidly researched book, his astounding claims of complicity are backed up with multiple footnotes which can send the reader on a veritable research junket. I pursued these notes (106 of them in Chapter 2 alone) and became even more convinced of the significance of Mosher's contribution in writing this book.

Dr Mosher's own experience in the field as a Social Scientist and a one time believer in what he now calls a "gigantic, costly and inhumane fraud upon the human race" is part of what makes his meticulously researched, well written and copiously documented work "Population Control: Real Costs, Illusory benefits" a MUST READ for anyone who is even slightly interested in this vital topic.

In addition to exposing the lie of the Population Controllers and unmasking the real enemy strangling human development, cascading birth rates around the world and the fact of the existence of what the author notes is "more coffins than cradles", he offers the way out of this perilous path. The last chapter of this Tome is entitled "From Population Control to pro-Natal Programs".

In it Dr. Mosher presents a well articulated alternative to the failed policies of the past which, if adopted, could reverse the plunge in population by recognizing human capital and promoting the family. In this excellently written counter proposal to the failed and unsupportable anti-natalism of the past he provides data and notes. He also expresses his own bent, with the kind of intellectual clarity which characterizes this entire book:

"The idea of controlling human fertility "for the good of the state and it people" as Beijing is fond of saying, is a 20th century anachronism. It deserves to be as thoroughly discredited as Marxist-Leninism, and for the same reason: It is at heart a philosophy of state coercion. In its more extreme manifestations in China and elsewhere, it has given rise to terror campaigns. But even in its mildest guises, it encourages a technocratic paternalism that effectively subjugates individual and familial fertility desires to the wishes of the state".

Well said. However, in my opinion, perhaps this insight reveals the only deficiency in this book. I would have liked to see a more thorough treatment of the influence of the Culture of death and materialism emanating out of the West. In particular, I would have liked to see an historic and philosophical expose of the false premises of the so called "pro-Choice" movement in our own beloved America. Out of this cauldron, the newest lie from the pits of the nihilism of the age has now been exported around the globe; what the late Servant of God John Paul II rightly called a "counterfeit notion of freedom" which allows for anti-natalism to masquerade under the banner of a freedom of choice.

This new death wave which threatens life and family has not occurred under a totalitarian regime of either the right or the left. Rather, through the manipulation of the language of choice, the co-opting of the Courts, and the failure of the weakened moral infrastructure which is the only safeguard of true freedom, it has flourished under a Democratic regime. Mosher does touch upon the issues as he details the complicity of the West, its moneyed figures and purported philanthropists, and their part in the unleashing of the UN regime of anti-natalism in the last century.

However, he did not, as with most of the subjects in this lengthy book, expose its root problems. Perhaps, he has another book planned. I certainly hope so.
Under his able leadership PRI has sought to "make a case against the widely held, but fundamentally wrongheaded, development paradigm which places economic and population growth in opposition to each other" and "To articulate the material and social benefits of moderate population growth and promote economic development through models which respect the dignity and rights of the individual human person and the family."

With this book, Steve Mosher has memorialized for all of us the sum total of a career of research and a wealth of lived experience which help to accomplish such a vital mission.

I have carried this dense, well written and carefully researched book around with me for months. Able to only read small portions of it at a time; I could not even begin to consider writing this Book review. I wanted to give it the attention it so well deserves. However, in the light of the current focus on Beijing, I could wait no longer.

The book is not a quick, nor an easy read. It shouldn't be. It discusses a deadly serious matter, a real matter of life and death. Not only the life or death of children in the womb who are being routinely killed and prevented from joining us as a result of the lies of the "Population Controllers" but potentially the coming demise of entire Nations and cultures.

"Population Controllers: Real Costs, Illusory Benefits" should be in every library of every concerned family, every school, every College or University and every office of every elected representative in this and every nation which values life. With his attention to detail and meticulous research, Dr. Steven W. Mosher has provided us with a Book of great significance.

Almost a "one stop shop", it puts at our disposal all of the facts and figures we need to unmask the lie that is "Population Control". However, he has done more; he has begun to propose the alternative way by articulating policy proposals which should be considered by the current candidates for the Presidency of the United States. I would love to see what Senators McCain and Obama had to say concerning the claims and the facts contained in this powerhouse of a book.

Buy this book. Read it and re-read it, again and again. Go back to it. Quote it, use it for a source book in your own pro-life work. Buy it for others. Then act on it.
