WASHINGTON, DC (CNA) - Reacting to the granting of marriage licenses to homosexual couples in California, the Alliance for Marriage Foundation is calling for the U.S. Congress to pass its Marriage Protection Amendment, which would change to the U.S. Constitution.
According to the foundation, that the California Supreme Court decision that instated homosexual "marriage" proves the need for the foundation's proposed amendment.
"In the most populous state in the Union, radical activists have convinced judges to ignore the will of the people and to follow the destructive lead of the Massachusetts courts in striking down the common sense definition of marriage," said Matt Daniels, president and founder of the Alliance for Marriage Foundation. "California is now ground-zero in the Battle to Protect Marriage, and the fight in California must now be joined in the Congress."
The proposed amendment reads: "Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union between a man and a woman. Neither this constitution or the constitution of any state, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups."
Marriage amendment proponents say that without such action, couples who contract same-sex marriages in California will return to their home states and attempt to change the laws there.
