LOS ANGELES (Catholic Online) - In an interesting and intriguing turn of events, even in the unpredictable world of the World Wide Web, a growing number of eyes are once again turning to the Web Site of former Presidential contender Mike Huckabee, at www.mikehuckabee.com.
There, where one used to find regular updates on the candidates positions, upcoming travel itinerary and political strategy, the visitor now finds a large clock. It is counting down the seconds until 12:00 p.m. EST, April 15, 2008. That is when a new web site will be launched.
However, is that all that the clock is counting down?
Of course, the speculation in the "blogosphere" is growing over the meaning of this countdown clock?
The former Governor of Arkansas and one time Republican candidate will give a speech at Cornell University on April 15th entitled "In God We Trust: The Role of Faith in Politics." Will he launch a new effort to organize People of faith?
In the Press Release announcing his appearance, the former Presidential candidate says "The First Amendment requires that expressions of faith be neither prohibited nor preferred...We should not banish religion from the public square, but should guarantee access to all voices and views. We should share and debate our faith, but never seek to impose it."
Rumors That Mike Huckabee could pick up the pieces of the former "religious right" have followed the Governor since he withdrew from the race. His blend of pro-life, pro-poor, populist and pro- family politics has managed to inspire many, well beyond the evangelical community.
His support for the end of the IRS and the income tax are also another possible answer to the question. The countdown clock points to April 15, the dreaded filing day. He is an ardent proponent of the abolition of the IRS and the income tax, calling for its replacement with the "Fair Tax".
Next, former Governor Huckabee has signed a contract with Creative Artists Agencies (CAA) of Hollywood. The high powered agency represents 2,000 clients. Numbered among them are George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore and Tony Bennett.
This has led to speculation that he may enter the world of television as the host of a new program or as a political commentator. His appearances throughout the campaign confirmed his sense of humor, his communication skills and his comfort with the medium.
Then there are those who still speculate that he might be asked to be the running mate of the presumed nominee of the Republican Party, Senator John McCain. However, that is the least likely scenario according to most observers.
Finally, the former candidate held an invitation only national telephone conference call this week. Those who participated could shed little light on the mystery when interviewed.
According to the participants, the former Governor indicated there were more campaigns ahead for him. He spoke to over 3,000 supporters, telling them that the success of his Presidential campaign run was a "seminal moment in politics." He told them "Let's dust ourselves off, let's get back on our feet, let's learn from everything we've been through and let's live to fight another day."
So, the only way to find out the answer to the question concerning the countdown clock is to keep watching.
