LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - John Glenn has died, surrounded by family and friends at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio following a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Annie.
John Glenn is one of the most authentic American heroes. He entered the military in World War II, first joining the Army to become a pilot, then the Navy, and finally transferring to the Marine Corps so he could become a pilot. He flew the F-4U Corsair as a pilot and completed 59 combat missions in the South Pacific.
He also flew in theater during the Korean War, completing two tours. He shot down three enemy aircraft.
After his military career, in which he earned many awards and decorations, he became a test pilot. He completed the first supersonic transcontinental flight in 1957.
In 1959, he joined NASA, and become one of the first astronauts.
He orbited the Earth on February 20, 1962, in his capsule, Friendship 7. He flew in space again on the Space Shuttle in 1998.
Glenn retired from the Marines in 1965 as a Colonel and became an executive for Royal Crown Cola.
He was elected as a senator in 1974, and served as a Democrat for the state of Ohio until 1999. He was considered as a vice presidential running mate in 1984, 1988, and 1992. He was never chosen for the spot.
John Glenn was a Presbyterian and remained married to his childhood sweetheart, Anna 'Annie' Margret Castor.
Sen. John Glenn became ill recently and had been hospitalized for more than a week with an unspecified condition. He passed away on Dec. 8, 2016.
His body will lie in state at the Ohio Statehouse and a public memorial will be held at Ohio State University. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
