John Glenn is one of the most authentic American heroes. He entered the military in World War II, first joining the Army to become a pilot, then the Navy, and finally transferring to the Marine Corps so he could become a pilot. He flew the F-4U Corsair as a pilot and completed 59 combat missions in the South Pacific.
He also flew in theater during the Korean War, completing two tours. He shot down three enemy aircraft.

He was elected as a senator in 1974, and served as a Democrat for the state of Ohio until 1999. He was considered as a vice presidential running mate in 1984, 1988, and 1992. He was never chosen for the spot.
John Glenn was a Presbyterian and remained married to his childhood sweetheart, Anna 'Annie' Margret Castor.
Sen. John Glenn became ill recently and had been hospitalized for more than a week with an unspecified condition. He passed away on Dec. 8, 2016.
