LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Officer Matthew Luckhurst noticed a sleeping homeless man and decided to play a cruel prank on him in May this year.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus released a statement explaining the situation.
According to Chief McManus, Officer Luckhurst was bragging to a fellow officer about collecting feces, putting it in a sandwich, playing it in a Styrofoam container, and leaving it beside the sleeping homeless man.
The officer, disgusted with Luckhurst's actions, reported the incident to internal affairs.
The civilian and sworn review boards were presented with the case in October, with both recommending Officer Matthew be suspended indefinitely.
The incident created such an uproar that Mayor Ivy Taylor released a statement concerning the officer, his termination and what it means to be a real member of the police force.
On Friday, Mayor Taylor announced: "Firing this officer was the right thing to do. His actions were a betrayal of every value we have in our community, and he is not representative of our great police force."
Meanwhile, Chief McManus met Luckhurst last week to finalize the suspension.
The Chief stated: "This was a vile and disgusting act that violates our guiding principles of 'treating all with integrity, compassion, fairness and respect.
"The fact that his fellow officers were so disgusted with his actions that they reported him to Internal Affairs demonstrates that this type of behavior will never be tolerated."
