LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Horror stories have been cropping up left and right as people across the U.S. have been overdosing on opioids, such as heroin and painkillers laced with animal tranquilizers.
Last week, a 7-year-old told her bus driver she couldn't wake her parents and investigators found them dead from an opioid overdose.
Last month, officials discovered a young boy trapped in the backseat of a vehicle as his parents' bodies were found slumped in the front seat after both overdosed.
Images and video of a crowd gathered around a couple passed out on the sidewalk in broad daylight was released last week as well, with the man sleeping with his head on a lawn, his back on a bench, and his feet on the sidewalk.
The crowd laughed and took pictures of the emergency situation in a sad projection of how the general public views overdose cases across the U.S.
The ongoing overdose crisis has left investigators desperate to get drug dealers off the streets but so far they have met with little success.
Two days ago a girl returned home from school to discover her parents unconscious and unresponsive.
The girl and an unknown cameraman recorded the couple as they attempted to rouse them from their stupor.
The cameraman says, "They f***** up, ain't they?" while the girl cries, "Dad! Dad!"
The mother remains completely unresponsive, while the father is able to briefly balance himself in a sitting position before falling back to the ground. 25;;08 *1 9**;36)5(*
"Mom!" the girl cries. "Mom!"
"Man, you can not be like this around your kids," the camera man says. "This s*** is not cool."
The teen is heard laughing at her parents, but the situation is not funny.
Every week the media picks up new overdose stories, often ending in deaths.
In too many circumstances, young children are offered as sexual playthings in exchange for more drugs or they suddenly find themselves orphaned.
People have been dying in public and in their homes due to their severe addiction to the lethal drugs yet still they want more.
Several anti-drug programs aimed at high school and elementary school kids have been warning kids to stay away from drugs in a preemptive attempt to keep kids drug-free.
Meanwhile, authorities continue to investigate suspected dealers.
