LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - The After School Satan Club will be a class offered to elementary kids after school. It is intended to directly compete with Good News Clubs, which are Christian Evangelical missions that also operate after school. Both Good News and After School Satan clubs will meet on school grounds.

Parents often work while their children are out of school for the day. After school clubs provide safety and activity for kids who cannot go home directly. They primarily operate at elementary schools and provide a form of after-school daycare for children.

Evangelical Christians established Good News Clubs to provide children with a wholesome option. But some people have objected to the Christian program, saying it crosses the line between church and state separation. The Good News Clubs were established (as the Child Evangelism Fellowship) in 1937. In 2001, a Supreme Court Decision affirmed their right to operate in public schools. Today there are about 3,560 Good News Clubs across the nation.

Now, the Satanic Temple plans to use the same court ruling, which holds that schools are "limited public forums" against the Christians.

Schools that allow Good News Clubs must now allow After School Satan Clubs. At least that is the understanding.

The Satanic Temple is not what most people assume. While they surround themselves with some pretty scary imagery, depictions of pentagrams and goat heads, they are not religious at all. In fact, most members probably consider themselves to be atheists or agnostics.

Their objection is to government endorsement of religion, in all its forms. The Satanic Temple has been dueling with city councils and other government organizations that open with prayers. In one Arizona town, the city's board had to decide whether to abolish prayers or permit a satanist to deliver a satanic invocation. The board opted to abolish prayer.

Likewise, the Satanic Temple hopes the Good News Clubs will close, rather than tolerate the presence of the Satanists. The closure of all religious clubs would please the Satanists who desire a purely secular public sphere.

When asked what the After School Satan program would look like, the Temple explained each class would include a literature lesson, as well as a science lesson, art, and other activities. There are no plans to make the classes religious in any way.

The Supreme Court has ruled that the use of school facilities by religious entities is perfectly legal and does not represent an endorsement. This does, unfortunately, open the schools to the Satanic Temple.

The good news is that parents still get to decide which program their child may attend. Kids will need a permission slip to enter the club. And it is difficult to see such a club lasting for very long with little or no attendance. The After School Satan Clubs will be crowdfunded, which may not work very well.

Such organizations cannot thrive without the active cooperation of the public, so it's up to us what becomes of After School Satan Club.
