LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - There are concerns that domestic terrorists could spark violence during the RNC convention. According to various sources, members of Black Lives Matter, biker gangs, and other organizations known for agitation will be attending the convention.
While these groups are welcome to peaceably attend, and even protest, there are concerns one group or another could spark violence.
There are no credible reports that violence is planned at this time. Still, the volatile mix of personalities and ideologies makes the concern reasonable.
There are also rumors the Cleveland police have been told to "stand down" in the face of possible violence. Such claims strains credulity, but if such a thing happens, it would suggest a very high level of corruption at work.
About 4,000 federal personnel are being sent to the convention as well as the Ohio National Guard. Thousands of area law enforcement will be on duty. The Department of Homeland Security admits they are concerned about violence or a possible terror attack, but they also have hundreds of people working the that specific problem.
FBI Director James Comey also said his agency has several hundred people working on intelligence and deployed to Cleveland in advance of the convention.
The Secret Service has ordered a parking ban, the closure of several city streets, and the overnight closure of Interstate 90 which runs near the downtown area. A massive security perimeter is also being erected including concrete and metal barriers. Trash cans, which could be used to conceal weapons or explosives are being removed.
A wide variety of common objects will be banned including backpacks and tennis balls, among other odd items. Everyone will be searched.
Personal security details will also be hard at work. Donald Trump is a lightning rod for leftist agitation. He has been accused of racism and of promoting violence at his own rallies. These things are only believable if spun a certain way, but they have entered the public narrative. As a result, Trump himself could be a target.
The convention will also top off a very divisive and bitter primary process for the Republican party.
Ideally the convention allows all factions within the party to set aside their relatively minor differences and concentrate on defeating Hillary Clinton. However, violence could upstage the event and taint Trump's campaign.
The best course of action for all Americans is to pray for a peaceful convention. There is no reason the country should be violently torn apart. We have elections every four years so we can peacefully change the course our country is on. We have courts and courageous police to uphold the law. The vast majority of Americans may have some dissatisfaction with the status quo, but only a tiny few think we should burn down the country and start over.
We must not let them claim the spotlight or drive the narrative.
