LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - "It is a combat death, of course. And a very sad loss," U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said during an official statement.
The Pentagon announced Tuesday morning that an American service member was killed in Iraq. the Navy SEAL was killed by enemy fire roughly thirty kilometers north of Mosul.
A defense official told CNN the service member was a U.S. Navy SEAL, though his rank has yet to be revealed.
The SEAL was an adviser to Kurdish Peshmerga forces currently fighting ISIS.
He was killed during an Islamic State assault "on a Peshmerga position approximately three to five kilometers behind the forward line of troops," Peter Cook, the Pentagon press secretary, stated.
Though the Pentagon has yet to release more information concerning the Navy SEAL's death, additional information is expected to be provided after his next of kin have been notified.
Meanwhile, the fight against ISIS continues.
Though ISIS has steadily lost territory, the constant influx of willing fighters paired with more aggressive terror techniques have made the eradication of the terrorist organization more difficult than initially believed.
