President Obama decides to keep over 5,000 American troops in Afghanistan

President Obama has plans of keeping 9,800 troops in Afghanistan for the majority of next year. In addition, Obama will maintain a force of 5,500 for 2017. Although Obama originally planned for only 1,000 troops to remain in Afghanistan by the end of his presidential term, the administration feels more confident in the good relations with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.
Obama's decision is one that will "prolong American involvement in the longest war in its history," according to USA Today.
