Davis remains steadfast in her resolve to uphold the law of God over the law of man.

Rowan County Clerk, Kim Davis had her day in court and it went badly. However, she still has her job, and she is still conducting herself with dignity despite the media circus surrounding her office. Ms. Davis still refuses to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, citing God's authority.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - As of Tuesday morning, Davis' office continues to refuse to issue licenses for marriage to same-sex couples. This is in spite of a refusal by the Supreme Court to hear her case. Her fate is now in the hands of a district judge who could hold her in contempt or even have her jailed for her steadfast belief.

This morning, one pair of men approached and asked for a license, vowing to stay all day if she refused. Davis replied, "You're going to have a long day." The men have already been sent away by her office four times.

Nothing is stopping these people from traveling to a neighboring county to obtain their licenses, but half of the nation seems intent on forcing Ms. Davis into the agonizing dilemma of choosing between her job and her faith. This is a choice no human being should have to make in the United States, for faith is supposedly protected by the First Amendment. Despite this fact, an artificial contention has been created specifically to ferret out resistance to same-sex marriage and eliminate it, as though it were some kind of abomination. Kim Davis now faces the furnace of martyrdom.

This isn't the first time a nation has gotten everything backwards.

The history of the Roman Empire is filled with stories of Christian Roman soldiers who refused to make pagan sacrifices on pain of death. These men were always martyred and became some of the earliest saints and martyrs of the Church. Kim Davis is likely to share their fate, at least figuratively.

There is substantial debate over whom the law protects. Until recently, clerks like Davis could expect to work without being asked to compromise their sincerely held religious beliefs. Now, the situation has reversed. It is religious people who are spun as pariahs by the media and who face real persecution.

The courthouse where she works is besieged by protesters from both sides, with plenty of imported anger arrayed against Davis. Supporters of Davis are mostly local folks.

Since the case is generating so much attention, it can be expected to resolve quickly now that the
Supreme Court has refused the hearing. The odds are that Davis will be compelled to resign or face fines and a possible visit to jail. Without support from the courts or from state officials, her martyrdom will come quickly.
