MUNTINLUPA CITY, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - The St. Louis County executive declared Ferguson under state of emergency after several protests in the streets. The protests formed from an incident concerning the "plainclothes" police officers who shot an 18-year-old black man. Police claim the man was the one who fired the first shot against them.
Tyrone Harris Jr., was one of the members involved in the recent shootout between the police and two groups of young people. That night was the one year anniversary of the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager who was killed by a white police officer in Ferguson. Harris was later charged with 10 counts; four for felony assault on a law enforcement officer.
Country executive, Steve Stenger, empowered the county police force, as well as the county's top commander Chief Jon Belmar, to oversee police operations in and around Ferguson. Police units from surrounding towns arrived last Monday to bolster efforts to maintain a calm and peaceful state in the county.
The commemoration of Michael Brown's death included looting, arson and confrontations with the police that continue to unnerve residents and demonstrators over the weekend. However, Mr. Stenger explained that violence will not be tolerated in the community anymore. "Chief Belmar shall exercise all powers and duties necessary to preserve order, prevent crimes, and protect the life and property of our citizens," he stated.
Several protesters have been arrested since Monday over several civil disobedience in the area. Five dozen people were arrested, plus 60 more who were arrested after blocking traffic for about half an hour on interstate 70 in the St. Louis suburbs.
Some political leaders that denounced the police in the past were not so critical in the wake of the recent violence in the areas. State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal, a Democrat who handles the district of Ferguson is already looking into the shooting incident and working to understand what led to the incident.
