MUNTINLUPA CITY, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - FBI director James Comey stated, in a recent speech at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado last Wednesday, that ISIS has proclaimed a caliphate in several parts of Syria and Iraq and has been very successful in urging Americans and Muslims through its campaign over social media.
ISIS urges Muslims who can't travel to the Middle East to "kill where you are" on social media, as the group continues to try to recruit.
According to FBI reports, Twitter handles a total of 21,000 English-language followers, worldwide, affiliated with ISIS; a number of these are considered U.S. Residents. The Jihadist group has convinced a significant number of Americans to go against their own country.
During Comey's speech, he informed the audience that several people have already been arrested after being believed radicalized by the members of the terrorist group.
The FBI assures the public that the bureau has issued hundreds of investigations, across several cases all over the country. Speculations that the Chattanooga gunman, identified as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, was one of the many Americans radicalized by ISIS were not confirmed by the bureau. The Chattanooga incident killed four Marines and one US Navy sailor last week. According to Abdulazeez's relatives, he had a history of depression and drug abuse.
The FBI Director compared al-Qaeda and ISIS in the ability to recruit members. According to Comey, al-Qaeda never used operatives that were so unstable and had tendencies to abuse drugs, something ISIS doesn't appear to deal with.
When asked if ISIS had already managed to surpass the 9-11 attack by al-Qaeda in 2011, Comey replied, "Yes."
