MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - The series of images present a different understanding of the white supremacist subculture that continues to live 150 years after the end of the Civil War. The notorious group continues to stand on the brims of today's society in all corners of America, including Virginia, Texas, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
Johnny Milano, a 26-year-old photographer took the photos as part of a long-term documentary project on white supremacist in the United States, which he started in 2012.
Milano came into contact with the regional head of the white supremacist group, National Socialist Movement. After acquiring access into the group, Milano was invited to photograph meetings and events where he met the Ku Klux Klan members.
In the photos, Ku Klux Klan members were seen clad in traditional coats as they stand beside affiliate groups and other members of the National Socialist Movement. They held the cross burning ceremonies that have come to symbolize the Ku Klux Klan.
In the wake of the attack, South Carolina removed the Confederate battle flag from the state capitol grounds, which is believed by many to be a divisive symbol of the South's pro-slavery legacy, to a museum.
The Loyal White Knights chapter of the Ku Klux Klan planned to execute a demonstration at the South Carolina State House.
"We're standing up for the Confederacy," the chapter's 'great titan' James Spears said. According to Spears, the speakers planned to talk about slavery and then the Klan would hold a cross-lighting or cross-burning ceremony on private property.
